A man has been arrested after he was caught posing as a real estate agent in Miami and stealing thousands of dollars from several people, authorities said.
Miami police arrested Jeremy Antonio Rivera, 25, and charged him with multiple counts of scheme to defraud, unlawful use of a communication device, acting as a real estate broker without allowed and grand theft.
Police said Rivera would contact the victims, show them rental apartments, receive a deposit, have them sign a bogus contract and disappear. He used various names to hide his identity, according to police.
At least six people in the Miami area fell victim to the scheme, losing a total of $6,600, police said. Authorities said other victims may be present, but have not yet come forward.
Rivera was arrested by Miami police while in the middle of a transaction he was making with another prospective tenant he was robbing, officials said.
Police are urging the public to find out who they are renting from by checking their real estate license using the MyFloridaLicense.com website.
Further cases are being investigated.
