They are in all the newspapers. They are on every building. They are on every bus, bus stop and notice board. Apparently, on every surface visible to the public, from Kaitaia to Bluff, realtors are smiling New Zealand. They’re always friendly, sometimes quirky, and often huge – 10 foot tall effigies staring at us as we crawl along the freeways from home to work, from work to home, day in and day out.

The fact that realtors have become Aotearoa’s most ubiquitous and recognizable celebrities is perhaps the most laughable (and disturbing) indictment of our bizarre zeitgeist. After all, is there anything that dominates the national conversation in 2021 in New Zealand more than housing? It has become an addiction, an obsession, the subject of our dreams and, more and more, of our nightmares.

But that intensity only means it’s a great time to be a real estate agent – the Wall St stock brokers of our time. The importance and number of ads is enough to suggest that there is a lot of money being spent. And with the booming market and the increase in the number of players entering the industry, traditional advertising models are obviously no longer enough – real estate agents and businesses have to be more and more creative to beat their money. rivals and attract more customers. For this reason, we appealed to New Zealanders to see what they thought were the best real estate listings across the country.

It’s the unbuttoned shirt in afterworks 46 and York fashion – a detail that proves fabulous success doesn’t need to be wrapped up in a neat and tidy demi-Windsor tie.

When it comes to puns, clichés and just plain bad writing, most professionals facing the public – journalists in particular – would be crucified for using them. But for some reason, real estate agents have an almost unlimited license to counterfeit.

But sometimes it actually works. Hutt Valley’s Ivan Wong Kee makes effective use of the puns in this billboard with his clever adaptation of the myth of King Midas and the Golden Touch. Through the adapted slogan, Ivan effectively implies that he is the king of real estate. This is the kind of confidence and knowledge of ancient history that I would look for in an agent, in the very unlikely event I have a house for sale! Bonus points for the red blazer.

Not Trevor. Not Cross. Not Travis. It’s THROUGH fucking shit! Travers Smyth (Smith?) Scores points for his originality and the refreshing modesty it takes to admit your name is sloppy in so many ridiculous ways. I mean, I understand how you can confuse his name with Travis. But how do you get Trevor? It doesn’t even sound the same.

5. Linh Yee

Forget about stagnant billboards and newspaper ads, if you really want to attract customers and appeal to different demographics, you’ve got to get into video. That’s exactly what Ray White’s Linh Yee did, creating a full music video that featured a rewrite of Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic”.

Production value looks decent, and the Range Rover in Ray White colors so cleverly juxtaposes the very basic Mt Roskill bungalow in the video. It doesn’t sound too bad either.

4. Rick Trippé

Rick Trippe is our ranking joker because he’s not actually from New Zealand – he’s a real estate agent from Darwin, Australia. I included it here because, well, I had to. I mean look at the guy. The bow tie. The strange red helmet. The half-smile, half-grimace. I just couldn’t ignore the overwhelming Australian character of it all.

The real reason Rick was included is his antics at work and on the water, which a simple Google search will reveal. An avid spearfishing enthusiast, Rick was on his boat in 2015 when he saw a racehorse drowning in the water nearby. It took him several hours, but Rick eventually saved the animal by towing it and guiding it to shore.

In another episode, he witnessed a battle between a poisonous stonefish and a sea serpent locked in a deadly grip. He fished the beasts from the water and separated them, returning them both to the sea. Either way, Alex Wu deserves his Bronze Medal for this creative publicity where he rides two houses like a colossus while giving a double boost. The judges (me) praised Alex’s cool hair, his core strength, and his innovative use of symmetry to bring a sense of order and calm to my very chaotic mind.

2. Pollie Ensing

There are endless techniques that can be used to sell a product. But what good is any of them when you can just dress like an iconic movie character from a multi-billion dollar nine-movie franchise?

Pollie Ensing of Palmerston North comes in second for her sheer simplicity – she dresses like Princess Leia from Star Wars. Again, clever use of the pun in the slogan: “results out of this world”.

Bonus points for the fact that she works in old Palmy, and not in the hotspots of Auckland or Wellington.

1. Carl Watkins

If the New Zealand housing crisis has shown us anything, it’s that a real estate agent doesn’t have to look a certain way in order to be successful. Carl Watkins embodies this maxim. For central Auckland, Carl has become an icon. For months now, his likeness has smiled on a curiously placed billboard overlooking Newton Gully, charming and confusing drivers with his phenomenally unorthodox look. Who is this man, we all ask. Does he rock a mule? Is that a faded sunburst halo behind his head? Why is he wearing what looks like a baby blue trench coat?

Whatever the reason, Carl’s unique look in an industry that exudes affectation makes him a compelling and entertaining figure – a figure that incites intrigue in a way that I’m sure doesn’t serve any purpose. that to increase its profile and its clientele. For this reason, I hereby name Carl Watkins the undisputed winner of my ranking.

Carl also gets bonus points for his other profession, hairdressing, and for a scene in his promotional video in which our champion pours water from a tap into a martini glass.
