A Day in the Life of Real Estate Broker Compass McKenzie Ryan

  • McKenzie Ryan, the founder of Compass’s asset consulting group, is a rising star in real estate.

Training for the Olympics and selling real estate in New York have one thing in common: intense competition.

And no one knows it better than McKenzie Ryan. The 29-year-old former rhythmic gymnast and classically trained ballerina is a former national level athlete who competed in the Junior Olympics and spent many years training for the games.

Her passion for real estate ignited while attending Horace Mann, a private coeducational kindergarten to grade 12 school in Manhattan. It was then that she made her first deal – while still in high school – when she called brokers and arranged tours led her to convince her family of five to move out.

From there, his training in real estate took off. Ryan has dived head first into all facets of the industry, channeling his ambitious and competitive nature into brokerage transactions. His resume ranges from development roles at Related – the company responsible for the development of New York landmarks like Hudson Yards – to retail leasing at Winick and other leading residential businesses.

“I was basically trained to be a top Olympic real estate agent,” the Upper West Side native told Insider.

Since 2016, she has worked at Compass, the brokerage house where she founded the Asset-Advisory team, a group focused on developing long-term strategies for their clients’ real estate assets in order to help them maximize their returns.

Often juggling 30 deals at one time between her sellers and buyers, she was named by Forbes as one of the city’s top energy brokers (the youngest person to ever receive recognition). It’s no surprise why: she recently sold a West Village townhouse that had been on the market for four years at full asking price within five months of getting listed.

Now, in the midst of one of its strongest years for sales to date, Ryan’s gross sales volume in 2021 is just over $ 34 million (not counting active ads). She has sold trophy properties across town, from a $ 7.25 million townhouse at 21 Downing St. to a $ 675,000 apartment in Chelsea which she sold through the publication of a Instagram story (which has caught the attention of its over 36,000 followers).

She shared the daily schedule that keeps her focused on achieving Olympic level feats.

Ryan’s morning begins at her West Village home, where she begins the day with a greeting. When she gets up, she even says aloud, “Hello, McKenzie.”

“We should be kind to ourselves, our bodies and our brains,” she said. “It’s a nice little introduction to the day.”

She also greets her 14-year-old Shiba Inu, Winter. “She has three different beds in the apartment,” Ryan said.

Then Ryan keeps her journal for a bit and writes down what she’s grateful for for what has happened in the past 24 hours. Noting affirmations and gratitude changed her life, she said, adding that

mindfulness
is important to her and she does yoga three times a week.

“My brain and my life are so much more open,” she said.

She stretches, walks in the winter, and has coffee – either “utility” coffee (to wake up) or fun coffee (a honey latte or cappuccino).

She runs or rides a bike to the gym. “Workouts are very important to me,” she said, adding that she runs an average of 5 or 6 miles a day.

“With my background, I need to be physically fit. Training is half mental, half physical,” she said. “And I do a ton of my business strategy when I train.”

9:30 a m

The working day begins. Usually, she spends three days a week working from her Compass office on 5th Avenue and 16th Street near Union Square and two days working from her apartment.

She starts by looking at her “Hot List” and “Hot List”, which list her active offers and represent her customers, from buyers to sellers to owners.

Going through all of her transactions, she keeps a checklist of who everyone is so that she never overlooks a single person. “People are always there with me all day long,” she said.

10:30 a m

She hits the phones for two hours.

During the first hour, she calls her sphere of influence: former clients, people who referred her business, interior designers, neighbors, etc. The goal of these discussions is to stay connected, gather ideas and keep your network alive.

Then it’s an hour of calls to any active or urgent business before a 10-minute break.

Ryan also spends time in correspondence. “I write three letters a day, either personal letters saying ‘hello’ or thank you notes,” she said. “I use the postal system on a daily basis.

12:30 p.m..m.

Around lunchtime, Ryan spends 30 minutes working on his customer relationship management, adding people to his database, and updating his contacts.

Then it’s time for an hour of awareness, shared between media engagements and building your network through Instagram. She will talk to writers or broadcast journalists or other New York professionals that she finds interesting and who could become clients when they need to buy or sell their home.

2:00 p.m.

One hour is set aside for face-to-face meetings, from discussions over coffee to walks in the park.

By mid-afternoon, she focuses on active business, finding properties for buyers and planning visits. Ryan is also working on the asset advisory strategy for his clients, which revolves around how they can increase returns on their properties.

“My day is very heavily focused on starting and running a business until 3pm,” she said. “Then I open all my time to screenings.”

She visits potential buyers and tenants through townhouses and apartments, moving from building to building throughout the afternoon.

“My screenings are mostly all located below 59th Street and generally on the west side,” she added. “I also have a big portfolio in Brooklyn.”

7:00 p.m.

The screenings calm down at 7 p.m.

“I like to take a relaxing walk with Winter at night or go for a run at night,” she said. Sometimes she goes to the dance studio – or dances in the street.

Ryan loves to dress up for dinners across town, new museum exhibits, or a Shakespeare performance in the park.

She goes to the public library a few times a week to take out books.

“I’m very immersed in New York,” she said. “I am the most New Yorker person of all time.”

For dinner, she’s either in town indulging in sushi, burgers, and cocktails, or she’s staying laid-back and healthy with her regular order of Sweetgreen Salad. “I’m either super laid back or super chic,” she said.

She does 1,000 crunches a night before relaxing, making a point of performing a little skin-care routine, then reading or listening to music.

Evening rituals extend right before bed, when she likes to visualize her future.

“I have an idea of ​​how I want to interact with the world,” she said. “Having this outline is so important to visualize and perform. I just want to live a meaningful existence in this world.”

Between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, the lights are off.
